HC Deb 15 November 1937 vol 329 c11
20. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department the number of consular officers of the various grades that are at present maintained by His Majesty's Government in foreign cities and towns; how many of these representatives are whole-time and/or salaried officers; and are all salaried officers British subjects?

Mr. R. S. Hudson (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

In the salaried consular service, all members of which are British subjects, there are 57 consuls-general, 137 consuls and 150 vice-consuls. In the unsalaried consular service there are one consul-general, 44 consuls, 275 vice-consuls and 21 consular agents.

Mr. Day

How many of the unsalaried consular officers are not British subjects?

Mr. Hudson

Perhaps the hon. Member will put that question down.
