§ 51. Major Sir Reginald Dorman-Smithasked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can assure the House that the Government of Burma will be consulted as to the effect on the rice industry of Burma of any modification of the preferences on rice in connection with the proposed trade agreement with the United States of America?
Mr. StanleyAs my hon. and gallant Friend is aware, the existing preference on rice and on certain other goods was guaranteed to India, of which Burma was then a part, by the terms of the agreement concluded at Ottawa between the Government of India and His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom. Any proposal for the modification of existing preferences would obviously have to be discussed with the Government of Burma.
