HC Deb 09 November 1937 vol 328 c1582
55. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will give separately the amounts that have been expended on accommodation, quarters, rent, etc., for troops stationed at Hongkong, Shanghai, Tientsin, and Wei-Hai-Wai; and whether the buildings occupied by the defence forces at Shanghai have been exempted from municipal taxation?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

Charges that may have been incurred locally have not yet been fully reported to the War Office. I understand the answer to the second part of the question is in the affirmative.

Mr. Day

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what financial assistance is provided by the inhabitants of the settlements towards these costs?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

No, Sir, I could not say that.
