HC Deb 02 November 1937 vol 328 c707
43. Mr. Craven-Ellis

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will consider levying a duty upon British registered and owned vessels built in foreign countries at costs which are below those at which similar vessels can be built by British shipbuilders, with the object of removing the unfair competition which exists when vessels are built by labour that is below the British standard?

Mr. Stanley

I do not consider that the imposition of such a duty as is suggested by my hon. Friend would be either practicable or advisable.
