HC Deb 01 November 1937 vol 328 cc548-9
72. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will give separately the number of police officers with less than five years' service to their credit who have resigned from the Metropolitan police force during the 12 months ended 31st December, 1936, and for the 10 months ended 31st October, 1937?

The Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd)

156 members of the Metropolitan police force with less than five years' service resigned voluntarily from the force during 1936, and 181 during the first 10 months of 1937. During the same periods 16 and 8 men of similar service resigned on being found unfit for further service for reasons of health.

Mr. Day

In view of the fact that these men received their training at the expense of the Metropolitan ratepayers, can the Under-Secretary say why they are allowed to resign to accept appointments in the Provinces?

Mr. Lloyd

They are entitled to resign under the conditions of the service.

75. Mr. Kelly

asked the Home Secretary the number of police officers who resigned from the Metropolitan police force in 1936 and up to the latest date in 1937?

Mr. Lloyd

178 members of the Metropolitan police force resigned voluntarily from the force during 1936, and 209 during the first 10 months of 1937. During the same periods 810 and 598 others resigned on becoming entitled to pension or on being found unfit for further service for reasons of health.

Mr. Kelly

Is it known to the Department how many of those who resigned from the Metropolitan police force joined other local forces in the country?

Mr. Lloyd

I must have notice of that question.
