HC Deb 01 November 1937 vol 328 cc546-7
69. Mr. Kelly

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education the number of local education authorities which have submitted regulations for operating the 1936 Education Act?

Mr. Lindsay

Local education authorities are not required to submit regulations under the Education Act, 1936. Six local education authorities up to the present have formally submitted a total of six voluntary school building schemes to be assisted by them under the Education Act, 1936, for sanction by the Board of the capital expenditure involved. It will, of course, be understood that in a very large number of other cases negotiations between local education authorities and managers are taking place.

Mr. Kelly.

In view of the Act of 1936 and the duty of the authorities to decide on beneficial employment, are any of them at work upon that matter in order that it may be known long before the Act comes into operation?

Mr. Lindsay

As the hon. Gentleman knows, the Board has already sent out a list of suggestions, and they are being considered by a variety of authorities.
