HC Deb 01 November 1937 vol 328 c534
39. Mr. Donner

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he can state the decrease in the number of breeding sows during 1937; and how this figure compares with the number of breeding sows in 1936 and 1935, respectively?

Mr. W. S. Morrison

Compared with 1936, the number of breeding sows (including gilts in pig) on agricultural holdings in England and Wales on 4th June, 1937, showed a decrease of 28,244 or 5.8 per cent. The decrease between 1935 and 1936 amounted to 10,888 or 2.2 per cent.

Mr. Alexander

May I take it, in view of these rather serious figures, that the Minister is now considering extending the quota for imported bacon?

Mr. Morrison

That depends on a variety of other circumstances—and upon the price of feeding stuffs as much as upon anything else.
