HC Deb 26 May 1937 vol 324 cc265-6
25. Mr. Garro Jones

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Air how many and what percentage of flight-lieutenants in the general duties branch of the Royal Air Force with permanent commissions have reached that position by way of promotion from the ranks?

Sir P. Sassoon

One hundred and three permanent flight-lieutenants in the general duties branch, comprising 16 per cent. of the total number, have been promoted from the ranks.

Mr. Montague

Does that represent a substantial percentage of increase since the matter was discussed about three months ago?

Sir P. Sassoon

It certainly represents an increase, and I hope that the percentage will be further increased. The Air Ministry is only too anxious to do what it can to assist the careers of men in the Air Force.
