HC Deb 26 May 1937 vol 324 c268
33. Lieut.-Colonel Sir Thomas Moore

asked the Minister of Transport whether he proposes to take steps, where space is available, to plant fruit trees alongside the main roads under his control?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

As children may climb these trees and thereby endanger their lives, their planting is not generally encouraged, although in suitable cases it can be considered.

Sir T. Moore

Will my right hon. Friend note the experiment or precedent on these lines of the First Commissioner of Works in the Royal Parks?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I am all in favour of fruit, but with precautions.

Mr. Bellenger

Would it not be possible to take some reasonable precautions, at the base of the trees, to prevent children climbing them?
