HC Deb 03 May 1937 vol 323 cc766-7
10. Mr. Arthur Henderson

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any action has been taken at Geneva to set up a preparatory commission in anticipation of the World Opium Conference to be held in 1940?

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Eden)

Preparatory work for the Conference for Limiting the Production of the Opium Poppy and of Raw Opium is among the items on the Agenda of the next session of the Opium Advisory Committee which will open at Geneva on 24th May. I understand that the Committee will consider, among other matters, the appointment of a Preparatory Committee for the purpose of drawing up a preliminary draft Convention.

Mr. Henderson

In view of the need for taking drastic and effective action in respect of the opium evil, will the Government delegates be instructed to work in close co-operation with the delegates of the United States delegation in order to ensure that this conference shall be a success?

Mr. Eden

I can assure the hon. Member that our delegation will do everything in its power to co-operate with the United States.
