HC Deb 03 May 1937 vol 323 c790
69. Mr. Touche

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been called to the doubts expressed as to the legal validity of an automatic stop-light on the rear of a motor-car as a signal of a driver's intention to stop; and whether he will make any statement on the subject?

The Minister of Transport (Mr. Hare-Belisha)

Paragraph 37 of the Highway Code says: Before you stop, or slow down or change direction, give the appropriate signal clearly and in good time. On page 16 of the code it is stated in the heading: Signals by drivers should be given with the arm extended from the side of the vehicle at least as far as the elbow when mechanical indicators are not used.
