HC Deb 25 March 1937 vol 321 c3066
53. Mr. Leckie

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the great dissatisfaction of the native fishermen at the intention of the Palestine Government to lease the sole fishing rights in the Sea of Galilee to tender; and whether, in the circumstances, he will ask the High Commissioner to postpone further action pending an inquiry?

The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

The report on the Fisheries of Palestine, furnished to the Palestine Government by a fisheries expert, contains recommendations for the leasing of the fishing rights of the Sea of Galilee to one responsible person for a term of years, with provisions to safeguard the employment, at adequate remuneration, of whole-time professional fishermen. I have no recent information on the subject, but I assume that the Palestine Government have been actively considering this recommendation. I will ask the High Commissioner for a report on the present position.
