HC Deb 25 March 1937 vol 321 cc3061-2
44. Mr. Kelly

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the recent increase in the price of sugar agreed to by leading Manchester grocers which, to some extent, is due to speculation on the prospects of limitation of sugar production in connection with the forthcoming International Sugar Conference; and whether, in view of the fact that our present imports of foreign sugar amount to approximately 600,000 tons per annum, he proposes to take any steps in connection with this conference to protect the interests of British consumers?

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade (Dr. Burgin)

I am aware of the reported increase of ¼d. per pound in the retail price of sugar in Manchester which the hon. Member mentions. As to the rest of the question, I would refer him to the answer given on 23rd March to the hon. Members for Bradford, South (Mr. Holdsworth) and Stourbridge (Mr. Morgan).
