HC Deb 15 March 1937 vol 321 cc1624-5
29. Sir Charles Cayzer

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, as the result of the counter proposals submitted to the Japanese Government by His Majesty's Ambassador in Tokyo, a settlement satisfactory to the British Leaseholders' Committee has now been arrived at concerning the cancellation of the perpetual leases in the treaty ports now held by British subjects?

Viscount Cranborne

Yes, Sir. An agreement has now been reached on the basis of proposals put forward by His Majesty's Ambassador with the assent of the leaseholders' committees. I am expecting to hear very shortly that notes have been exchanged between His Majesty's Ambassador and the Japanese Government giving effect to the agreement.
