HC Deb 15 March 1937 vol 321 cc1611-2
11. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he can give any information respecting the strike in the Calcutta jute mills; and what other strikes are taking place in India at the moment?

Mr. Butler

On 24th February 6,000 workers of the Budge-Budge jute mill struck as a protest against the dismissal of four weavers for inefficiency. Since then a considerable number of operatives in several other mills have gone on strike, partly in sympathy with the Budge-Budge workers and partly on other grounds, including a demand for increase of wages. I am informed that the situation is peaceful. The hon. Member will appreciate that it is not practicable to give an accurate reply to the second half of his question, but I am not aware of any other important strike.
