HC Deb 15 March 1937 vol 321 cc1643-4
88. Mr. Simmonds

asked the Home Secretary what action he proposes to take to prevent the sale of inflammable cinematograph film to children?

Sir J. Simon

This is a difficult matter which has been receiving much consideration, and I should be glad to discuss the question with my hon. Friend.

Mr. Simmonds

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this inflammable film is sold for use with a lantern illuminated by an oil lamp, and in view of the terrible fate which might overtake children with this toy, could he enlist the services of the Press to warn parents to clip off a piece of this film and see whether it is inflammable and, if it is, to destroy it?

Sir J. Simon

I should still like to see my hon. Friend about this matter.

Mr. Day

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether the Home Office have yet decided what is inflammable and noninflammable film?

Sir J. Simon

It is a serious question and it is a very difficult one. I can only say to-day that the matter is under consideration, and that I should very much like to find a way of dealing with it.
