HC Deb 11 March 1937 vol 321 cc1335-6
59. Lieut.-Colonel Wickham

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the hardship inflicted on poor elderly people who, having invested their life's savings in a house in which to pass their declining years, are faced with an order condemning their home and ordering its demolition; and whether he can see his way to afford them relief by introducing legislation to protect their life interest, subject to safeguards against sale or letting, or to grant them adequate compen- sation for the loss of their savings and their homes, or by any other means?

Sir K. Wood

The case of the owner-occupier of an unfit house included in an Order was fully considered in connection with the amending legislation passed in 1935. Provision was made in this Act for special payments where houses though unfit are found to be well maintained and a considerable number of such payments have been authorised.
