HC Deb 11 March 1937 vol 321 c1320
22. Mr. Thorne

asked the Home Secretary how many crematoriums there are in this country; and how many people were cremated in 1937?

Sir J. Simon

The number in England and Wales is 29. I have no information as to the number of persons cremated this year, but the total number of cremations in England and Wales last year was 10,188.

Mr. Thurtle

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether there is a tendency for the number of cremations to increase from year to year, and whether it has any relation to the total number of deaths?

Sir J. Simon

I have not the figures actually before me, but my impression is that there is a tendency for them to increase.
