HC Deb 08 March 1937 vol 321 c784
33. Mr. R. J. Russell

asked the Postmaster-General on what grounds he has permitted the establishment of a sub-post office in premises at 144, Blackstock Road, London, N.4, devoted otherwise solely to the sale of intoxicants; in how many other cases do similar circumstances exist; and whether, in view of the objection of many persons to enter or to send their children into places where liquor is sold, he will arrange for the removal of sub-post offices from premises of this kind?

The Postmaster - General (Major Tryon)

Sub-post offices are established on licensed premises only where no other suitable accommodation is available, and in no case where an "on" licence is held. The present sub-postmaster of the Blackstock Road, Finsbury Park Office, who holds an "off" licence, was the only applicant for the post who could offer suitably situated premises. There is no record readily available of the total number of sub-offices on off-licence premises.
