§ 1. Mr. Dayasked the Under-Secretary of State for India particulars of the number of disturbances that have taken place in British India since 1st January, 1936, giving the figures of any fatal casualties; whether any of same occurred among Europeans; and on how many occasions were troops employed?
§ The Under-Secretary of State for India (Mr. Butler)Apart from the communal riots in Bombay in October, as a result of which 93 people were killed, there were 11 disturbances in British India during 1936, mostly of a minor character, involving 17 fatal casualties, none of which were Europeans. Troops were employed only during the Bombay riots and during a communal disturbance at Poona on 24th April.
§ Mr. ButlerThe hon. Member will realise that some of these disturbances 772 occurred some time ago, and the situation in those places is now normal.
