HC Deb 08 March 1937 vol 321 cc771-2
1. Mr. Day

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India particulars of the number of disturbances that have taken place in British India since 1st January, 1936, giving the figures of any fatal casualties; whether any of same occurred among Europeans; and on how many occasions were troops employed?

The Under-Secretary of State for India (Mr. Butler)

Apart from the communal riots in Bombay in October, as a result of which 93 people were killed, there were 11 disturbances in British India during 1936, mostly of a minor character, involving 17 fatal casualties, none of which were Europeans. Troops were employed only during the Bombay riots and during a communal disturbance at Poona on 24th April.

Mr. Day

Are these troops now returning to their original stations?

Mr. Butler

The hon. Member will realise that some of these disturbances occurred some time ago, and the situation in those places is now normal.
