HC Deb 04 March 1937 vol 321 cc536-7
55. Mr. Hardie

asked the Minister of Health whether he has had his attention drawn to a statement made by Dr. Angus MacNinen, physician superintendent of the Glasgow Royal Mental Hospital, at the annual meeting, where he pointed out the necessity for protecting the mental health of the workers on the same basis as workers are protected in certain dangerous trades; and whether he can give any indication of when such legislation will be introduced?

Sir K. Wood

Yes, Sir; I have seen a Press report. I would, however, point out that the statement referred to the desirability of extensive study to determine whether legislation is called for, and I am therefore not in a position to make any statement as to the possibility of legislation.

Mr. Hardie

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware of the tremendous effects of the Bedeaux system and the Taylor system on the nerves of the workers; and will he not take steps to do something, in view of the nerve destruction that is taking place?
