HC Deb 04 March 1937 vol 321 c533
48. Mr. Hannah

asked the Minister of Health whether it will be possible this Session to amend the law which allows a grant for rebuilding, but none for restoring, old houses within the limits of towns?

The Minister of Health (Sir Kingsley Wood)

This question was considered by the Departmental Committee on Housing, but they reported against a subsidy for urban reconditioning and I cannot undertake to introduce legislation on the matter.

Mr. Hannah

Is it not a matter of considerable importance when in some cases definitely inferior new houses have been built instead of more substantial old ones being reconditioned?

Sir K. Wood

This matter was carefully considered by the Departmental Committee. My hon. Friend may be aware that in the case of alterations and repairs a loan can be given in certain cases.

Mr. Hicks

Should not the Minister be the one to discourage jerrybuilding?

Sir K. Wood

Yes, Sir, the hon. Gentleman and myself join in that view.
