HC Deb 04 March 1937 vol 321 cc521-2
28. Mr. Garro Jones

asked the Home Secretary whether he will publish any evidence in his possession which indicates the receipt of financial aid from foreign sources by persons or organisations engaged in political propaganda in the United Kingdom, including any sums received by way of investment in vehicles of propaganda?

Sir J. Simon

No, Sir.

Mr. Garro Jones

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that many of his colleagues on that bench are frequently dropping hints that such evidence is in their possession? That being so, would it not be fairer to publish it and thus enable the right hon. Gentleman, as Home Secretary, to escape the suspicion that he is storing it up for release just prior to the next General Election?

Sir J. Simon

I am not aware of any such hints being conveyed. If they are being conveyed, I have nothing to do with them, and my public duty requires me to answer the hon. Gentleman's question by saying, "No, Sir."

Mr. Garro Jones

Why will not the Home Secretary publish this evidence.

Sir J. Simon

I do not think that it would be in the public interest.
