HC Deb 04 March 1937 vol 321 cc535-6
51. Mr. Leach

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that it is the practice of manufacturers of margarine to add cod-liver oil or other oil from fish livers, and to treat with ultra-violet rays, or by other means artificially to vitaminise the margarine synthetically under the claim that its food value is then equal or superior to that of summer butter; and whether any investigation has been made by the experts of his Department for the information of the public as to whether such claims are valid?

Sir K. Wood

I am aware that vitamins are added artificially to some brands of margarine. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative, but I have no reason to doubt that it is possible to make margarine the equivalent of butter in vitamin content.
