7. Mr. Wilsonasked the Minister of Labour whether he has any information as to the number of firms and employés to whom holidays with pay are granted, and whether this can be made public; and, if the information is not available, will he endeavour to obtain it?
§ Mr. E. BrownThe information at present collected relates to payment for holidays under collective agreements and the latest available particulars were published in the "Ministry of Labour G[...]ette" for April, 1936. I should add that the terms of reference of the Com- 518 mittee which I propose to appoint in this connection are as follow:
To investigate the extent to which holidays with pay are given to employed work-people, and the possibility of extending the provision of such holidays by statutory enactment or otherwise; and to make recommendations.
§ 8. Mr. Rileyasked the Minister of Labour how many industries, if any, in Great Britain have secured an annual holiday with pay by agreement between the employers and operatives during the two years ended 31st December, 1936, and the number of workers covered by such agreements?
§ Mr. BrownAs the reply is long, I propose, with the hon. Member's permission, to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
§ Following is the reply:
§ The classes of workpeople covered by agreements, providing for holidays with pay, reported to my Department as having come into operation in Great Britain during the years 1935 and 1936, were as shown below:
§ Workpeople employed in furniture removing and warehousing: England and Wales.
§ Workpeople employed by municipal motor omnibus undertakings: Great Britain.
§ Workpeople employed by certain omnibus companies in Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire.
§ Road transport workers employed by certain firms in the retail distributive trade in a number of provincial towns in Great Britain.
§ Deputies and shot-firers in coal mines in North Wales.
§ Coopers employed in breweries in Birmingham and Wolverhampton.
§ Workpeople engaged in wholesale meat distribution: Smithfield.
§ Tugboat crews employed by the Port of London Authority.
§ Tugboat crews at Gravesend.
§ Managing chemists employed by cooperative societies in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, North Wales, and parts of Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
§ Employés of retail co-operative societies in Surrey and Cornwall.
§ Workpeople employed in co-operative society's bakeries in Glasgow and Clydebank.
519§ The total number of workpeople covered by these agreements is estimated at about 90,000.
