HC Deb 02 March 1937 vol 321 cc182-3
67. Mr. Thorne

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the reasons why the Government of Paraguay have decided to withdraw from the League of Nations?

Viscount Cranborne

Paraguay's reasons for withdrawal were given in a telegram to the Secretary-General of the League despatched in February, 1935; they arose out of dissatisfaction with the League's decisions in connection with the Chaco war. Particular objection was taken to the fact that the embargo on export of arms had been raised in respect of Bolivia but maintained in respect of Paraguay, and that the question of responsibility for the dispute had not been investigated as demanded by Paraguay.
