HC Deb 02 March 1937 vol 321 cc170-1
32. Mr. Day

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether, with a view to relieving unemployment in the depressed areas, the Government will undertake, at an early date, an industrial survey for the purpose of ascertaining the employment capacity of existing industries and the possibilities of new industrial expansion and development?

Mr. Runciman

Industrial surveys of the regions of heavy unemployment were made for the Board of Trade by the Universities in those regions in 1932 and have recently been, or are being, brought up to date.

Mr. Day

Were any of the trade unions consulted when these inquiries were made?

Mr. Runciman

I have no doubt that the Universities took advantage of every means they had for collecting the information.
