HC Deb 29 June 1937 vol 325 c1787
42. Mr. W. Joseph Stewart

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that the percentage of insured unemployed persons in Sunderland is 24.8, South Shields 27.9, and in the Boldon area 24.2; and what steps, if any, are being taken by the Government to introduce new industries into these areas with a view to providing employment?

Mr. Butler

As the hon. Member is aware, the general provisions of the Special Areas (Amendment) Act, 1937, are designed to promote the industrial development of the Special Areas by offering substantial inducements to new industrial undertakings in those areas.

Mr. Stewart

Is it the intention of the Government to establish a trading estate in that area with a view to introducing new industries, so as to find work for the large nurnbers of unemployed in that particular area?

Mr. Butler

I know that the Commissioner has the needs of that area in mind.

Mr. Stewart

Is it the intention of the Government to set up a trading estate?

Mr. Butler

That raises a separate question which I would be grateful if the hon. Member would put down.

Mr. Lawson

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is practically a new area opening out at Peterborough; and what steps are the Government taking to control these factories in order that industries may be sent to the distressed areas?

Mr. Ede

Can the hon. Gentleman say whether his Department is drawing the attention of new firms to the magnificent water frontage available on the Tyne recently acquired by the South Shields Corporation for development in this area?

Mr. Butler

The Government have always these matters in mind, and I can assure the hon. Member that these areas will have every consideration.
