HC Deb 29 June 1937 vol 325 c1789
47. Mr. Day

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer particulars of the total amount that has been voted by this House for the King's Plate for racing in Ireland?

Sir J. Simon

The sum of £1,563 was voted annually from 1831 to 1935 inclusive. The total amount voted was, therefore, £164,115. From 1936 the charge was transferred from Votes to the Civil List in accordance with paragraph 18 of the Report of the Select Committee on the Civil List.

Mr. Day

Is it the intention of the Government to make any further contribution to racing in the Irish Free State?

Sir J. Simon

I think that the present arrangement works very well.

Mr. Bellenger

May I ask the right hon. Gentleman whether, as a quid pro quo for the granting of this money, he will give those hon. Members who so desire it the opportunity of receiving confidential information in advance of the event.
