HC Deb 29 June 1937 vol 325 cc1778-9
20. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that a new ruling is being operated among troops at Aldershot whereby advances of pay cannot be drawn unless the soldier leaves a minimum sum of £2 10s. to his credit in the hands of the authorities; and whether, in view of the hardship caused thereby, he will cause it to be rescinded?

The Secretary of State for War (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

No new order or ruling has been made by Aldershot Command dealing with advances of pay. Under the Royal Warrant for Pay a man is entitled to a month's advance, and a noncommissioned officer to two months' advance of pay, at the discretion of his company commander, when proceeding on furlough.

Mr. Gallacher

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that I got a letter from a friend of my own in the Guards who has been refused an advance until £2 10s. is lying to his credit in the hands of the authorities?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I am sorry the hon. Member's friends are so misinformed.
