HC Deb 24 June 1937 vol 325 c1361
26. Mrs. Tate

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware of the shortage of accommodation in remand homes in Middlesex, and the consequential difficulties with which magistrates are faced when dealing with juvenile delinquents; and whether he will take steps to remedy the situation?

27. Mr. Viant

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware of the shortage of remand homes in the county of Middlesex and the manner in which this shortage impedes the work of juvenile courts; and will he consider urging the county authority to expedite the increase of such homes?

Sir S. Hoare

I have received no representations that the remand home accommodation provided by the Middlesex County Council is insufficient for the needs of the county, and I am informed that it is only rarely that it is necessary to seek accommodation for Middlesex boys in other remand homes. The present home was opened last autumn, and I understand the local authority are considering the provision of a new and slightly larger home in a more convenient district.
