HC Deb 22 June 1937 vol 325 c1023
66. Mr. T. Smith

asked the Secretary for Mines to what extent protective equipment in the way of helmets, gloves, etc., is in operation in the various coalfields?

Captain Crookshank

The reports for 1936 of the divisional inspectors and of the Safety in Mines Research Board, which will shortly be published, contain a good deal of information showing that satisfactory progress has been made in the various coalfields in the use of protective equipment; hard hats, for example, being bought at a rate of more than 12,000 a month. I should like to take this opportunity of expressing my appreciation of the keenness and co-operation, shown by all sections of the industry, which have enabled a gratifying measure of progress to be attained.
