HC Deb 16 June 1937 vol 325 cc366-7
60. Brigadier-General Clifton Brown

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that two fatal accidents have occurred in the last ten days from contact with the live rail on the Southern Railway, one near Brighton and one near Mitcham; and what steps he is taking to see that the Southern Railway are providing proper fences or protection against this new danger?

Mr. Burgin

I am in communication with the railway company regarding the circumstances attending these accidents and am awaiting the result of my inquiries.

Brigadier-General Brown

Is my right hon. Friend aware that since I put down the question there have been two more fatal accidents, and in view of the promise given by his predecessor to look into these matters, will the right hon. Gentleman see that proper fences are put up?

Lieut.-Colonel Acland-Troyte

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider making the death rail illegal and insisting on the use of overhead wires.
