HC Deb 14 June 1937 vol 325 cc2-3
1. Mr. Lansbury

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether, in order that Members of both Houses may be fully acquainted with conditions on the Indian Frontier and Waziristan, he will issue a White Paper setting out the causes which led to the recent tribal rising and consequent warfare; the casualties sustained by British and Indian troops and officers; the total number of men of all forces engaged up to date; the casualties, so far as is known, sustained by the fighting tribesmen and the civilian population and a record of bombing of villages, if any, and the resultant destruction of life and property including flocks, herds, or other livestock; the proposals the Indian Government are putting forward for establishing permanent peace throughout the district; and whether he will consider putting a map of the district in the Tea Room so that Members may make themselves acquainted with the districts from which the tribesmen engaged in the war come?

The Under-Secretary of State for India (Lord Stanley)

My Noble Friend will arrange for the issue of a White Paper giving the information desired by the right hon. Gentleman, so far as it is known and as soon as it can be prepared. A map of the district will be placed in the Tea Room.

60. Mr. Day

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will give particulars of the casualties that have occurred among British troops engaged on the North-West frontier of India during the recent unrest; and in what regiments these have occurred?

The Financial Secretary to the War Office (Sir Victor Warrender)

I would ask the hon. Member to be good enough to await the issue of the White Paper promised by my Noble Friend the Under-Secretary of State for India in reply to the right hon. Member for Bow and Bromley (Mr. Lansbury) earlier this afternoon.

Mr. Day

Cannot the hon. Baronet tell us what the casualties have been?

Sir V. Warrender

I do not see any point in both Departments publishing the same list.
