HC Deb 14 June 1937 vol 325 c36
68. Mr. Kelly

asked the Home Secretary the number of firms operating a five-day week; and whether the Factory Inspector's report shows such method of working to prove of advantage to the people engaged in such establishment?

Mr. Lloyd

There are no accurate statistics available as to the use of this system, but I would refer the hon. Member to the paragraph on the subject in the Annual Report of the Chief Inspector of Factories for 1934, pages 82–85, which contains information as to the use of the system and its advantages and disadvantages. I am informed that there has been some extension of the use of the system during the past year.

Mr. Kelly

In view of the statement which was made in the 1934 report, will the hon. Gentleman ask the factory inspectors to report upon the position which they find operating in the country at this time?

Mr. Lloyd

I think that fuller information will become available after the passage of the Factories Bill.

Mr. Kelly

Why not before that?
