HC Deb 14 June 1937 vol 325 c38
6. Mr. J. Griffiths (for Mr. A. Jenkins)

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the High Commissioner for the Free State of Danzig has submitted a report on the present situation in Danzig to the recent meeting of the League Council or to the Committee of Three; and, if so, can he publish the report or make a statement to the House upon it?

Mr. Eden

The answer to the first part of the question is, No, Sir. The second part of the question does not, therefore, arise.

7. Mr. Griffiths (for Mr. Jenkins)

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in his position as rapporteur to the Committee of Three appointed by the League to watch affairs in Danzig, his attention has been called to the fact that Herr Wiechmann, a member of the Volkstag, has been arrested by the Danzig political police, that he has been sent to Germany, and that he was not tried by the Danzig court in accordance with the Danzig Constitution; and what steps it is proposed to take to protect Danzig citizens against violations of the Constitution of the Free State?

Mr. Eden

The hon. Member may rest assured that the High Commissioner will draw the attention of the Council to any matter affecting the maintenance of the Constitution, if he considers it proper to do so. I have no information on this matter and, in the absence of a report from the High Commissioner. I see no reason to suppose that the position is as stated in the question.
