HC Deb 07 June 1937 vol 324 c1399
7. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the proposed negotiations for a Western Pact will be negotiated on the basis of the Covenant of the League of Nations; and will the pact be open to be signed by other Powers who are members of the League of Nations?

Mr. Eden

Discussions on this subject are not yet sufficiently advanced for me to be able to make a statement on them. I can, however, assure the hon. Member that His Majesty's Government are fully mindful of the point raised in the first part of the question.

Mr. Smith

Will the right hon. Gentleman give an undertaking that during the negotiations nothing will be done which is inconsistent with membership of the League of Nations?

Mr. Eden

If the hon. Member will read my answer he will find it satisfactory on that point.
