HC Deb 07 June 1937 vol 324 c1411
32. Mr. Thorne

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he can give the House any information in connection with Sir John Siddeley's gift of Kenilworth Castle and estate to the nation; and who will be responsible for the upkeep of the castle and for its immediate repairs?

Sir P. Sassoon

Sir John Siddeley has most generously expressed his intention of making the Commissioners of Works guardians of Kenilworth Castle under the Ancient Monuments Acts, and it is understood that he is prepared, in addition, to provide a considerable sum of money towards the cost of the necessary repairs. The responsibility for the upkeep of the castle and for the repairs will rest with the Commissioners. I am sure that hon. Members will wish that I should take this opportunity of expressing my gratitude to Sir John Siddeley for his generous action, which will preserve Kenilworth Castle for the nation in perpetuity and will make it possible to begin the work of repair without delay.
