HC Deb 29 July 1937 vol 326 c3276
2. Mr. Ellis Smith

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware of the relative high percentage of unemployment in parts of North Staffordshire and Cheshire, of the high percentage in Kidsgrove, Biddulph, and Congleton; and what steps are being taken to introduce new industries into these areas with a view of providing employment?

Mr. E. Brown

Yes, Sir. I would draw the attention of the hon. Member to Sections 5 and 6 of the Special Areas (Amendment) Act, 1937, which enable assistance to be given, in certain circumstances, for the development of industry in districts outside the Special Areas.

Mr. James Griffiths

Has any area been scheduled at all since that Act was passed?

Mr. Brown

Not yet, but I have had a number of deputations from various Members and bodies about it, and I believe that preparations are being made in certain areas.
