§ 27. Captain Cunningham-Reidasked the Home Secretary whether he is contemplating the setting up of a Royal Commission to review prison conditions in this country?
§ Sir S. HoareAs my hon. and gallant Friend is aware, the question of prison conditions is engaging my close attention, and I have already indicated various directions in which I think further progress is to be sought. During recent years different aspects of the problem have been investigated by three Departmental Committees, and I do not think that the appointment of a Royal Commission is called for at the present stage.
§ Mr. ShortWill the right hon. Gentleman approach the Prison Commissioners with a view to finding the money for new buildings?
§ Sir S. HoareThis matter is receiving my attention, including the question of new buildings.
