HC Deb 28 July 1937 vol 326 cc3077-8
35. Mr. Day

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what is the estimated amount of naval tonnage now under construction or projected by the British Commonwealth of Nations and the United States of America, respectively?

Mr. Cooper

The estimated British figures are, some 570,000 tons building, and about 94,000 tons projected, that is, authorised by Parliament but not yet ordered. According to the information in my possession, the corresponding figures for the United States of America are, some 347,000 tons building, ordered or about to be ordered, and, in addition, roughly 40 vessels projected under forthcoming programmes.
