HC Deb 27 July 1937 vol 326 cc2825-6
5. Miss Wilkinson

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is yet in a position to state when the start will be made in Jarrow on the proposed new steel works?

The President of the Board of Trade (Mr. Oliver Stanley)

I am informed that progress is being made with the detailed arrangements for the establishment of the works, but that it cannot yet be said when it will be possible to begin its construction.

Miss Wilkinson

Is there any likelihood of their starting during these summer months?

Mr. Stanley

I know that the company are pressing on with the arrangements as fast as possible.

Miss Wilkinson

Will the Minister during the Recess keep this matter closely in his mind in view of the real anxiety there is about it?

Mr. Stanley

Yes, I certainly will, but I think that in fairness to those in charge of the company, I ought to say that I know how urgently they regard the matter.
