§ 54. Colonel Wedgwoodasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any steps have yet been taken to prevent further agitation by the Mufti?
§ The Secretary of State for the Colonies (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)The Government of Palestine, with the assistance of the military authorities, is keeping a close watch on the situation, and I am confident that all necessary measures will be taken to check agitation inconsistent with the peace, order and good government of Palestine, in whatever quarter it may arise.
§ Colonel WedgwoodAre we to understand the Mufti is still allowed to circulate and to stir up trouble and to go free?
§ Mr. Ormsby-GoreThe right hon. and gallant Gentleman asked a question about agitation. I think he has gone in for a good deal of agitation before in his career. The whole question is whether it is agitation leading to a breach of the peace. Expression of political opinion by the ordinary methods to which we are accustomed in this country is not an offence.
§ Colonel WedgwoodAre we to understand that the right hon. Gentleman compares the agitation that we carry on on these benches with the agitation of the Mufti?
§ Mr. Ormsby-GoreNo, Sir.
§ Colonel WedgwoodIn that case, is the Mufti to be arrested or to be allowed to go free?
§ Mr. Ormsby-GoreI cannot possibly answer that question. It entirely depends on what he does.
