HC Deb 21 July 1937 vol 326 c2189
Mr. Attlee

(by Private Notice) asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he can give the facts with respect to an alleged incident concerning a German submarine in British waters.

Mr. Cooper

On Monday last a German submarine was on the surface outside territorial waters in the vicinity of Portland Bill, where she had a perfect right to be. A British destroyer and submarine were carrying out exercises in the same locality, and a depth charge was fired which brought the British submarine to the surface, as intended. This was an ordinary naval exercise, and had no connection whatever with the presence of the German submarine.
