HC Deb 19 July 1937 vol 326 cc1753-4
2. Mr. Day

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India particulars of the number of riots or disturbances involving loss of or injury to life and damage to property that have taken place in India during the 12 months ended to the last convenient date?

Earl Winterton

The particulars asked for in respect of the year 1936 were given in the reply to the hon. Member's similar question on 8th March last. From 1st January to 31st March of this year, there have been eight disturbances involving loss of life or injury, in which 20 persons were killed and 92 injured.

Mr. Day

Have any special steps been taken to try to prevent these riots from taking place?

Earl Winterton

I would remind the hon. Member that since 31st March the question of law and order has been one for the Provincial Governments.
