HC Deb 01 July 1937 vol 325 cc2121-2
7. Mr. Day

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons on the registers of the Employment Exchanges in Great Britain as at the last convenient date?

Mr. E. Brown

At 24th May 1937, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 1,451,330 unemployed persons on the registers of Employment Exchanges in Great Britain.

Mr. Day

In view of the fact that these figures are considerably higher than they were in 1929, will the Minister say what steps the Government propose to take to reduce them?

Mr. Brown

The hon. Member has taken that date rather opportunely. If he had taken 1931, it would have been different.
