HC Deb 01 July 1937 vol 325 c2119
2. Mr. James Griffiths

asked the Minister of Labour how many areas have been certified under the provisions of the Special Areas (Amendment) Act, 1937; how many site companies have been formed; and what progress has been made in regard to them?

Mr. E. Brown

It is an essential condition of assistance to an area certified under Section 5 of this Act that a site company should be formed. I understand that the question of establishing a site company is under consideration in several areas, but in no case has the matter yet reached a stage at which an application that the area should be certified can usefully be considered.

Mr. Griffiths

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether, in view of the experience of the provisions of this Act, there is any possibility of certifying these areas?

Mr. Brown

I can add nothing to what I have said, except that I know that in several areas active consideration is now being given to the matter.

Mr. Griffiths

And nothing has been done.
