HC Deb 20 January 1937 vol 319 c181
22. Brigadier-General Brown

asked the Home Secretary what is the annual number of recruits needed for the police forces in England and Wales and in Scotland, respectively; and what percentage of these men are ex-service men?

Mr. Lloyd

The average number of men recruited annually for the police forces of England and Wales is approximately 3,000; I understand that the corresponding figure for Scotland is approximately 270. I am not able to give any close estimate of the proportion of these men who are ex-service men, and the proportion varies a good deal from force to force, but on the average it will be about 10 per cent. or rather more.
