HC Deb 25 February 1937 vol 320 c2183
62. Mr. Burke

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he can give any information as to the view taken by His Majesty's Government's representatives on the Bank for International Settlements as to co-operation between that bank and the German Reichsbank?

The Chancellor of the Exchequer (Mr. Chamberlain)

I understand that there has been no change in the relations between the. German Reichsbank and the Bank for International Settlements. I may add that the Bank for International Settlements is a private institution, and that Governments do not appoint representatives to its board.

Mr. Burke

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Dr. Schacht stated that he is prepared to discuss proposals for a new agreement for collaboration with the Bank for International Settlements on the grounds that the Reichsbank has now changed, being no longer a private concern but under Government control?

Mr. Chamberlain

There is a change in the relationship between the German Government and the Reichsbank, but no change in the relationship between the Reichsbank and the Bank for International Settlements.

Mr. Burke

Is the right hon. Gentleman having regard to the statement of Dr. Schacht that he is prepared to discuss a new agreement?

Mr. Chamberlain

That question is not inconsistent with what I have just said.
