HC Deb 24 February 1937 vol 320 cc1967-8
2. Mr. A. Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the arrest of leaders of the political opposition in the city of Danzig; whether the retiring League Commissioner has asked for explanations from the Senate; and whether any action has been taken as the result of his representations?

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Eden)

The answer to the first part of the question is, "Yes, Sir." With regard to the second and third parts, I have no information.

5. Mr. Mander

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether any appointment as League of Nations High Commissioner for Danzig has now been made; and what steps are being taken to restore to their liberties and rights the Conservatives, Socialists, and Catholics imprisoned contrary to the Constitution?

Mr. Eden

Professor Carl Burckhardt, Professor at the University of Zurich, was appointed League of Nations High Commissioner in Danzig on 18th February for a period of three years. It will be for the new High Commissioner, on taking up his appointment, to take into consideration, on the basis of the report adopted by the Council on 27th January, all matters affecting the maintenance of the Constitution.
